At ECAO, we want to provide fun and educational activites for the Ethiopian youth in Ottawa. We hope these activities will help them learn their culture and provide great opportunities in the future.
Cultural Cooking Workshop
August 2026Participants learned how to prepare a traditional Ethiopian dish, Misir Wat (spiced red lentil stew). Each participant will receive a printed recipe to take home and will have the opportunity to enjoy the meal together after the cooking lesson.
This workshop promotes cultural preservation, youth leadership, social inclusion, and community belonging by bringing Ethiopian descent youth together to learn traditional cooking, strengthen cultural identity, and build meaningful connections with their peers and community.
Cultural Stories: Theatre Program
July - September 2026ECAO x Jua Centre collaborated to create a Cultural Stories Children’s Theatre Program!
Youth brought The Adventures of Adey: In the Simien Mountains to life through a live theatre production rooted in storytelling, climate education, and cultural pride.
Through this program, participants will explore Ethiopian and African diasporic stories, learn about environmental stewardship, and use theatre to build creativity, confidence, teamwork, and leadership. By adapting Adey’s journey for the stage, youth will connect with culture, community, and climate action in a fun and meaningful way. The final play was showcased at the ECAO New Year's Celebration!
